Upper Eyelid Surgery Improves Appearance and Vision
Drooping eyelids can make you look older than you feel, and interfere with your vision. Some patients experience this problem as they grow older, while others have a genetic predisposition to sagging eyelids. To improve both appearance and vision for patients with this condition, Dr. Suzanne Yee offers upper eyelid surgery at her state-of-the-art practice in Little Rock, AR. Dr. Yee is an experienced cosmetic surgeon, and can rejuvenate your eyes by removing excess fat and skin from your eyelids, and artfully tightening the remaining skin. Blepharoplasty is sometimes called an eyelift, and it is often combined with other cosmetic facial procedures to give patients a younger, yet natural-looking appearance. About Upper Eyelid Surgery
Upper eyelid surgery can be performed for either cosmetic or functional reasons. The aging process causes skin to lose elasticity, and when combined with gravity, this can weigh the eyelids down. Younger patients may experience similar problems if drooping eyelids are an inherited trait. Whether due to age or genetics, heavy or baggy eyelids can make you look and feel tired or older than you actually are.
Procedure
Dr. Yee usually performs upper eyelid surgery as an outpatient procedure. You will receive appropriate sedation by our nurse or nurse anesthetist for your comfort. Dr. Yee will then make minimal incisions that will be hidden within your upper lash line. Next, she will remove excess skin, fat, and muscle tissue. Lastly, she will tighten remaining skin and use tiny stitches to close the incisions. If you are having blepharoplasty on both your upper and lower eyelids, the process will last approximately two hours. If Dr. Yee is operating on your upper eyelids only, it will take less time.
Recovery
After eyelid surgery, you should plan on resting for the first week. Dr. Yee will provide you with specific post-operative instructions, and she will recommend special drops and ointment to aid your healing and comfort. You can have your stitches out in a week or less; in the meantime, try to avoid strenuous activities. Swelling and bruising are common, but you can expect to recover within approximately two weeks.
Risks and Benefits
As a surgical procedure, upper eyelid surgery comes with inherent risks and complications. Although rare, these can include infection, bleeding, abnormal eyelid position, and dry eyes. You can reduce your risks by choosing an experienced, board-certified cosmetic surgeon. Benefits include a refreshed appearance, lighter-feeling eyelids, and improved vision if eyelids or eyelashes were acting as an obstruction.
Combining Procedures
Many patients like to combine blepharoplasty with other cosmetic procedures such as a facelift or brow lift. Dr. Yee can discuss combining procedures with you in detail during a consultation, if this interests you. Another option is to take advantage of the skin procedures that Dr. Yee provides to treat wrinkles around the eyes, or in other areas of the face.
